Press Release

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.3 million adults aged 18 or older attempted suicide in 2017. Perhaps this number can be reduced if we take the time to recognize the signs of suicide in others or when thoughts of suicide enter our own mind or of a loved one.

Signs of Suicide

The following suicide signs should be taken seriously, particularly if thoughts of suicide and verbalization of “not wanting to exist” or “ending it all” have occurred.

Signs of suicide and depression to watch for include:

  • Talking about wanting to die or kill oneself
  • Looking for a way to kill oneself
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
  • Talking about feeling trapped or being in unbearable pain
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Withdrawing or feeling isolated
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
  • Displaying extreme mood swings

The risk is greater if the behavior is new, or has increased, and if it seems related to a painful event, loss, or change.
