The best Karma is giving to those who need it most. Karma Boxes are starting to pop up all over town providing non-perishable food, first aid and toiletries to those in need. The Karma Box Project can best be summed up by its slogan, “If it is empty, fill it. If you need it, it is yours.”
The concept is simple, but powerful. The wooden and plexiglass box is made by those in the recovery community and installed at various locations throughout the community, so they are easily assessible to those in need. If a person needs an item, they are welcome to take what they need at no cost. The boxes are adopted by mindful community members who take it upon themselves to replenish the boxes with additional items.
The Karma Box Project is a community initiative started by Grant Denton in 2018. Grant Denton has dedicated his life to the homeless and those in recovery. He is with the Reno Street Outreach Team and has worked with Volunteers of American and several recovery organizations.
“The Project fulfills dual roles. One is for the benefit of the person who is struggling, who in turn learns the value of taking ownership of something in his or her community,” said Denton. “The second purpose is to help reduce the cultural stigma of substance use, mental illness and homelessness by encouraging community members to participate in filling Karma Boxes with needed items.”
The community’s newest Karma Box was just installed at Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital in South Reno.
“We are proud to partner with Grant and have a Karma Box at our facility,” said Steve Shell, CEO of Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital. Mental illness and Substance Use Disorder do not discriminate and affect people of all walks of life. I’m proud of how our employees have embraced the cause and take it upon themselves to refill the box. Now that is good Karma!”
