Growing up is challenging enough. For adolescents struggling with a mental health condition, finding the right teen mental health treatment can determine their long-term health and happiness.

What Are the Main Teen Mental Health Treatment Options?

If you’re looking for teen mental health treatment in Reno, there are several options to choose from, including inpatient, outpatient, and residential treatment. As the programs vary in intensity, it’s important to choose the right program for your teen’s unique mental health needs.

Inpatient treatment options are typically used when someone has a severe mental illness. If your teen has tried other treatments unsuccessfully, they might need this in-depth approach.

It’s also important to consider whether the teen’s friends and school environment are contributing to their mental health issue or not. If this is the case, inpatient care or a residential treatment facility may be a better option.

Outpatient treatment, such as a partial hospitalization program (PHP), can be a good choice if your teen needs to retain the structure and support of their normal family life and school environment.

Inpatient Services

Sometimes, teens need the intensity of an inpatient program for depression, panic attacks, psychosis, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, substance abuse, and other mental health conditions. At Reno Behavioral Healthcare, we offer support by helping teens boost their self-confidence, address co-occurring medical needs, develop healthy family relationships, and develop skills for daily living. Our trauma-informed program includes expressive therapy, socialization therapy, group therapy, recreation therapy, and medication management.

Outpatient Services: Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

While our inpatient programs require teens to remain at the site 24/7, our outpatient services offer more flexibility. In PHP, we also offer trauma-informed care, medication management, group therapy, socialization therapy, recreation therapy, and expressive therapy. We can also help teens build family relationships, improve their interpersonal skills, and increase their self-confidence.

While in our PHP, teens are present for six hours a day, Monday to Friday. The program typically lasts for two to four weeks, and it includes academic options to help teens stay on track with their coursework. As the only PHP for teens in the state, this program provides a vital path to mental wellness for adolescents in the area.

Residential Treatment

You can also receive mental health treatment through a residential treatment center program. Our residential program is for females between the ages of 12 and 17 who have serious mental health concerns. It offers 24-hour supervision and typically lasts for 30 to 90 days.

Benefits of Teen Mental Health Treatment

Once someone enrolls in teen mental health treatment, they can quickly start to enjoy a number of the benefits.

Peer Support

Teens typically feel comforted when they realize they aren’t alone. Group therapy and peer support help teens feel understood. It also provides them with a source of advice from others who have gone through the same challenges.

Improved Quality of Life

Ultimately, the biggest reason to go to a teen mental health treatment center is to become happy and healthy. The right treatment facility gives your teen the skills and support they need to recover and overcome their mental health concerns.

Aftercare Programs

Most problems don’t go away forever. Because of this, it’s important to enroll in an aftercare program. These therapy and group support sessions are useful for helping teens stay on track as they navigate a return to normal life.

Decreased Risk of Complications

The right treatment can prevent someone’s mental health challenges from becoming worse. It helps them improve academically and socially. Dual diagnosis treatment can also treat co-occurring health problems, so the teens are less likely to relapse in the future.
